HIV Prevention (PrEP)

PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a highly effective way to reduce the risk of HIV infection for people who are HIV-negative but at ongoing risk of exposure. Family Medicine Associates offers PrEP counseling, prescribing, and monitoring as part of confidential, ongoing primary care for adults in Westfield.

Who PrEP Is For

PrEP may be a good option if you:

  • Have a partner who is HIV-positive
  • Have multiple sexual partners or a partner whose HIV status you don’t know
  • Have recently been diagnosed with another STI
  • Use injection drugs and share needles or other equipment
  • Want an additional layer of protection alongside other prevention methods

How PrEP Works

When taken as prescribed, PrEP is highly effective at reducing the risk of getting HIV from sex or injection drug use. It does not protect against other STIs, so it’s typically paired with routine STI screening and, when appropriate, condom use.

What to Expect

  • Baseline lab work, including HIV and kidney function testing, before starting PrEP
  • A prescription and guidance on taking it consistently
  • Routine follow-up visits, typically every three months, for repeat testing and prescription renewal
  • Ongoing STI screening as part of your PrEP care
